Crisis: Spain, number of jobless down by 100,000 in May
For third consecutive month but 3,75% up from 2012
(ANSAmed) - MADRID, JUNE 4 - The number of unemployed workers in Spain fell by 98.265 units over the last month, reaching 4.890.928 people registered in unemployment lists, the labour and social security ministry said on Tuesday. This is the third consecutive month during which the number of jobless in Spain has decreased though the overall percentage remains among the highest in the European Union at 26,5%. On an annual basis, however, unemployed workers have risen by 3,75% - 176.806 units.
Labour Under Secretary Engracia Hidalgo told a press conference that the new data showed the first signs of economic recovery. 'A few months ago increases reached up to 12 percentage points', said Hidalgo. 'There is now an enormous decrease signalling the presence of symptoms connected to recovery'. The new situation is mostly connected to the number of new contracts in May: 1.283.261, most of which (91.5%) were seasonal due to the beginning of the summer season, Hidalgo admitted. Indeed the highest number of contracts were signed in Andalusia, Catalonia and Valencia. Last Saturday Spanish Premier Mariano Rajoy announced positive developments for the labour market at an economic gathering saying that 'I am not very inclined to speak about green buds or end of the crisis around the corner but I invite you to look at the most recent data and unemployment trends which will be released on Tuesday'.
