It is very easy for politicians to pronounce that more and more regulations are the answer to scandals in Parliament. But more bureaucracy is not the solution, especially when the politicians caught up in the latest sleaze allegations are all accused of breaking existing rules. What we really need is maximum transparency – so that we know what our politicians are up to and who is paying them for it – and accountability to their voters, informed by a free press. That is why we need a proper recall power with voters able to kick out those who fail and primary selection contests so that our politicians answer to their constituents first instead of their party leaderships. The scandals will keeping coming until serious changes are made.
