EU Has "Deep Concern" About Egypt Events, EU's Ashton Warns

BRUSSELS--The European Union is deeply concerned about recent developments in Egypt, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton warned Sunday, as she called on the country's interim authorities to put an end to violence and hold new elections soon.

Egypt's military intervened earlier this month to oust the Muslim Brotherhood, led by President Mohamed Morsi, from power. The Muslim Brotherhood has since led demonstrations against the ouster.

"The EU is following the recent developments in Egypt with deep concern," Ms. Ashton said in a statement on behalf of the 28-member bloc. "It is of utmost importance that Egypt returns rapidly to a legitimate government and democratic structures."

Ms. Ashton called on Egypt's new authorities to "make every effort so that politically motivated arrests and other forms of harassments do not take place," and to hold fresh elections "in the shortest possible time."

"Sexual violence must be stopped," she said.

The EU "will continue to monitor the situation closely," Ms. Ashton said.
