The following report is a complimentary offering from MEMRI's Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor (JTTM).
In a letter written the day after celebrated liberal Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai addressed the world from the U.N., Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander Adnan Rasheed urged her to return to Pakistan and to attend a madrassa.
Rasheed, who had been imprisoned for involvement in an assassination attempt on General Pervez Musharraf, was freed in a daring April 2012 jailbreak by TTP fighters.
The letter is a bid to counter arguments forwarded by Malala Yousafzai, who became well known for her then- anonymous online diary for BBC Urdu in 2009, when the Taliban militants began enforcing Islamic sharia rule in Pakistan's Swat district following a pact between the Pakistani government and the Taliban.
A copy of the letter, which was written in English, was obtained by a leading Pakistani newspaper, which published it unedited on July 17, 2013; the text has been very lightly edited here.
Following is the text of the letter:[1]

"There Were Thousands Of Girls Who Were Going To School And College Before And After The Taliban Insurgency In Swat; Would You Explain Why Only You Were On Their Hit List?"

"In the Name of Allah the Most Merciful and Beneficent
"From Adnan Rasheed to Malala Yousafzai
"Peace to those who follow the guidance
"Miss Malala Yousafzai
"I am writing to you in my personal capacity; this may not be the opinion or policy of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan or other jihadi faction or group. I heard about you through BBC Urdu Service for the first time when I was in Bannu prison; at that time I wanted to write to you, to advise you to refrain from anti-Taliban activities that you were involved in. But I could not find your address, and I was thinking how to approach you via your real or pseudo name; all my emotions for you were brotherly because we belong to same Yousafzai tribe.
"Meanwhile the prison break [in April 2012 when Taliban fighters freed Adnan Rasheed from prison in Bannu] happened, and I was supposed to be in hiding. When you were attacked it was shocking for me; I wished it had never happened, [but] I had advised you before. [The] Taliban attacked you; [whether this] was Islamically correct or wrong, or you deserved to be killed or not, I will not go in this argument now, let's leave it to Allah Allmighty, He is the best judge.
"Here I want to advise you, as I am already late, I wish I had advised you in my prison time and that this accident had never happened. First of all, please [keep in] mind that Taliban never attacked you because of going to school or [because] you were an education lover; also please [keep in] mind that the Taliban or mujahideen are not against the education of any men or women or girl. The Tliban believe that you were intentionally writing against them and running a smearing campaign to malign their efforts to establish Islamic system in Swat, and [that] your writings were provocative.
"You said in your speech yesterday [on July 12, 2013, from the U.N.] that pen is mightier than sword, so they attacked you for your sword, not for your books or school. [But] there were thousands of girls who were going to school and college before and after the Taliban insurgency in Swat; would you explain why only you were on their hit list?"

"You Are Using Your Tongue At The Behest Of... Others, And You Must Know That If The Pen Is Mightier Than The Sword, Then The Tongue Is Sharper; And The Injury Of Sword Can Be Healed But The Injury Of The Tongue Never Heals"

"Now to explain you the second point; why are the Taliban blowing up schools? The answer to this questions is that not only Taliban in KPK [Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province] or FATA [Federally Administered Tribal Area] are blowing up the schools, but that the Pakistan Army and Frontier Constabulary [FC, a paramilitary force] are equally involved in this issue. The reason for this action is common between them – that is, the turning of schools into hideouts and transit camps once [they] come under control of either party, Pakistan Army or Taliban.
"In 2004 I was in Swat; I was researching the causes of the failure of the first revolution attempt by Sufi Muhammad [to establish Islamic sharia system in Swat and its neighboring districts]. I came to know that FC was stationed in the schools of Swat in tehsil Matta [region], and that the FC was using schools as their transit camps and hideouts. Now tell me who is to blame? Dozens of schools and colleges are being used by the Pakistan Army and FC as their barracks in FATA; you can find [this] out easily if you like. So when something sacred is turned lethal, it needs to be eliminated; this is the policy of the Taliban.
"Blowing up schools when they are not using strategically [this is unclear] is not the Taliban's job; some black sheep of the local administration may be involved [with the aim of] extract[ing] more and more funds in the name of schools to fill their bank accounts [in the name of war on terror].
"Now I come to the main point, that is, EDUCATION; it is amazing that you are shouting for education, you and the UNO [United Nations Organization] are pretending that you were shot due to education, although this is not the reason. Be honest, not the education, but your propaganda was the issue; and what you are doing now, you are using your tongue at the behest of... others, and you must know that if the pen is mightier than the sword, then the tongue is sharper; and the injury of sword can be healed, but the injury of the tongue never heals, and in wars the tongue is more destructive than any weapon."

"[By Having You Deliver Speeches, The U.N.] Takes You To Their Office To Produce More And More [Who Are] Asian In Blood But English In Taste, To Produce More And More [Who Are] African In Color But English In Opinion, To Produce More And More Non-English People [Who Are] English In Moral[ity]"; "Why [Do] They Want To Make All Human Beings English? Because Englishmen Are The Staunch Supporters And Slaves Of The Jews"

"I would like to share with you [this point]: that the Indian sub-continent was highly educated and almost every citizen was able to read or write before the British invasion [from the mid-1750s onwards]. Locals used to teach British officers Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, and Persian. Almost every mosque acted as a school too, and Muslim emperors used to spend a huge sum of money on education. Muslim India was rich in farming, silk, and jute, and from textile industry to ship building. No poverty, no crises, and no clashes of civilization or religion. Because the education system was based on noble thoughts and noble curriculum.
"I want to draw your attention to an extract from the minutes written by Sir T.B. Macaulay [who conceived and designed the education system prevalent in India and Pakistan today] to British parliament, dated 2nd February 1835, about what type of education system is required in the Indian subcontinent to replace the Muslim education system. He stated: 'We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern, a class of persons Indian in blood and color, but English in tastes, in opinions, in morals and in intellect.'
"This was and this is the plan and mission of this so-called education system for which you are ready to die, for which UNO takes you to their office to produce more and more [who are] Asian in blood but English in taste, to produce more and more [who are] African in color but English in opinion, to produce more and more non-English people [who are] English in moral[s]. This so-called education made [U.S. President Barack] Obama, the mass murder[er], your ideal, didn't it? Why [do] they want to make all human beings English? Because Englishmen are the staunch supporters and slaves of the Jews. Do you know that Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder [of Aligarh Muslim University and Indian Islamic reformer of the 19th century] and symbol of English education in India, was a freemason?
"You say a teacher, a pen, and a book can change the world; yes I agree with [this], but which teacher, which pen, and which book? It is to be specified [that] Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: I am sent as a teacher, and the book He sent to teach is the Quran. So a noble and pious teacher with prophetic curriculum can change the world, not with satanic or secular curriculum."

"The Taliban Want To Implement What Is In The Book Of ALLAH And UNO Want[s] To Implement What They Have In Man-Made Books; We Want To Connect The World To Its Creator Through The Book Of Allah And UNO Want[s] To Enslave The World"

Adnan Rasheed
"You have given the example that once a journalist asked a student that why a talib [student] was afraid of this education, he replied that a talib didn't know what was in this book. The same I say to you, and through you to whole world, that they [are] afraid of the book of Allah because they don't know what is in it. The Taliban want to implement what is in the book of ALLAH, and UNO want[s] to implement what they have in man-made books. We want to connect the world to its creator through the book of Allah, and UNO want[s] to enslave the world to few evil creatures.
"You have talk[ed] about justice and equality from the stage of an unjust institution [the UN]; [in] the place where you were standing, uttering for justice and equality, all the nations are not equal, only five wicked states have the veto power and the rest of them are powerless; dozens of times when all the world united against... Israel, only one veto was enough to press the throat of justice.
"The place [from which] you were speaking to the world [the UNO] is heading towards a new world order; I want to know what is wrong [with] the old world order? They want to establish global education, global economy, global army, global trade, global government and, finally, global religion. I want to know: Is there any room for the prophetic guidance in all [the] above global plans? Is there any room for Islamic sharia or Islamic law ... which the U.N. call[s] inhumane and barbaric?
"You have talk[ed] about attack[s] on polio team[s]; would you explain why the then-American foreign secretary of state Henry Kissinger, a Jew, spoke in 1973 [about the need] to reduce the Third World population by 80%. Why have sterilization and eugenics programs been running in different countries in one way or another under the umbrella of the UNO? More than 1 million Muslim women have been sterilized in Uzbekistan, forcibly and without their consent.
"Bertrand Russell writes in his book [about] the impact of science on society, 'diet, injections and injunctions will combine, from a very early age, to produce the sort of character and sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable and any serious criticism of power that be will become psychologically impossible.' This is why we have reservation[s] on the so-called polio vaccination program."

"I Ask You, And Be Honest In Your Reply: Had You Been Shot... [By] Americans In A Drone Attack, Would The World Have Ever Heard Updates On Your Medical Status?"

"You say Malala Day is not your day, but is the day of every person who has raised [their] voice for their rights. I ask you why such a day is not assigned to Rachel Corrie – only because the bulldozer was Israeli? Why is such a day not assigned to Afia Siddique [female Pakistani scientist jailed in the U.S. for trying to kill U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan] – because the buyers are Americans? Why is such a day not assigned to Faizan and Faheem – because the killer was Raymond Davis [CIA agent who killed the two Pakistani men in Lahore and was freed]? Why is such a day not assigned to those16 innocent Afghan women and children who were shot dead by an American, Robert Belas – because he was not talib [Taliban?]"
"I ask you, and be honest in [your] reply: Had you been shot... [by] Americans in a drone attack, would the world have ever heard updates on your medical status? Would you be called 'daughter of the nation' [as Afia Siddiqui is called]? Would the media make a fuss about you? Would General Kayani [Pakistani Army chief] have come to visit you, and would the world media be constantly reporting on you? Would you have been called to the U.N.? Would a Malala Day be announced?
"More than 300 innocent women and children have been killed in drone attacks but who cares, because the attackers are highly educated, non-violent, peaceful Americans."

"I Wish That The Compassion You Learned From The Prophet Jesus Would Be Learned By USA And NATO, So They Should Stop Shedding The Blood Of Innocent Muslims Across The World – And I Wish The Same For The Followers Of Buddha, To Stop The Killing Of Innocent Unarmed Muslims In Burma"

"I wish that the compassion you learned from the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, would be learned by the Pakistan Army, so they should stop the shedding of Muslim blood in FATA and Baluchistan. I wish that the compassion you learned from the Prophet Jesus would be learned by USA and NATO, so they should stop shedding the blood of innocent Muslims across the world – and I wish the same for the followers of Buddha, to stop the killing of innocent unarmed Muslims in Burma, and Sri Lanka, and I wish the same for the Indian Army to follow Gandhi jee, and to stop genocide in Kashmir; and yes, the followers of Bacha Khan, the ANP [the secular Awami Nationalist Party which ruled for five years] has an example of non-violence in their five-year regime in KPK province: for example, Swat, where a single shot was not fired, and we witnessed the followers of Bacha Khan implementing the philosophy of non-violence in its true soul, with the support of jets, tanks and gunships.
"[Finally], I advise you to come back home, to adopt the Islamic and Pushtoon culture, to join any female Islamic madrassa near your home town, to study and learn the book of Allah; to use your pen for Islam and [for the] plight of the Muslim Ummah, and to reveal the conspiracy of [the] tiny elite who want to enslave the whole of humanity for their evil agendas in the name of a new world order.
"All praises to Allah the creator of the Universe."
