The Muslim Ramadan beginning in the Middle East Tuesday, July 9, heralds more, rather than less, bloodshed. After at least 51 deaths in a Cairo shootout Monday, Egypt’s military chief Gen. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi rebuffed US efforts for national dialogue and is preparing rapid action to meet the Muslim Brotherhood’s “intifada” in Egyptian towns and Sinai. Iran and Russia are rushing military supplies to Bashar Assad, who is pressing ahead with his projected Syrian-Hizballah battle for Aleppo after rejecting a Ramadan ceasefire.

Egyptian soldiers Monday, July 8, shot dead 51 Muslim Brotherhood supporters, injuring 322, at a sit-in for the reinstatement of deposed President Morsi at the Republican Guards Club in Cairo. The army, which lost an officer and seven wounded soldiers, said “armed terrorists” tried to storm the compound. DEBKAfile: Away from the limelight, the army prepares to secure the Sumed pipeline carrying Persian Gulf oil to the Mediterranean, and Suez Canal shipping, on intelligence of a Muslim Brotherhood clandestine unit conspiring with Sinai Salafists and Hamas to target them.
