(ANSA) - Brussels, July 31 - European Union border agency Frontex expressed alarm on Wednesday at a recent wave of migrant arrivals on the southern coast of Italy.
"In the last week, 1,300 migrants landed in Sicily and Lampedusa," said Frontex.
"It is a worrying signal that requires continuous monitoring".
Many migrants fleeing north Africa often arrive by sea at the Port of Lampedusa or in Sicily, their first European ports of call.
But the crossing is dangerous and many drownings are reported.
Earlier this month, Pope Francis visited Lampedusa to raise awareness of the plight of migrants.

… two thirds of immigrants are from the EU — a territory that is not subject to controls because of the free movement of people. Humanitarian immigration, which is subject to the Geneva Convention and thus cannot be controlled either, accounts for 11 per cent. Finally, 21 per cent of immigrants arrive within the framework of family regrouping legislation [...] Only immigrants who come from third countries to seek work can be selected, but they account for just 2 per cent of immigrants who settle in Austria.
