The Middle East is critically important. Washington's irrational support for Al Qaeda-linked Islamists, from Libya to Egypt to Syria, is making matters worse. Understandably, Moscow believes that the U.S. is still trying to use organized Islam/Islamism as a sword--against Russia (and China).
Syria is the new Afghanistan. Nothing makes sense.
POSTSCRIPT: Russia's alliance with Iran and Hezbollah is alarming. The Kremlin has clearly decided that it has nothing to fear from Shiite Islamism; even the prospect of a nuclear armed Islamist Iran doesn't seem to matter to Moscow.
