The blue lamp gutters

5:10pm

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, has written to me.

Well, not to me personally, you understand: it’s one of these mass mail-shot emails purporting to be a personal message, of the kind that politicians now go in for – the equivalent of nuisance advertising that clogs up the fax machine. I regularly get them from President Obama too, who periodically thanks me for my invaluable support.

Anyway, back to Mrs May who informs me in today’s billet-doux that I can now tell my friends and family about

...radical new reforms to put the public back at the heart of our drive to cut crime, and give people more influence over their local communities.

For the first time you will have a real say in how your local area is policed through directly elected Police and Crime Commissioners. From May

Slaying the Sky Dragon

4:35pm

An apparent must-read on the anthropogenic global warming scam has just been published. Looks like Slaying the Sky Dragon: Death of the Greenhouse Gas Theory doesn’t just expose AGW ‘science’ as dodgy but the incompetence and fraud that gave rise to it. According to theAmazon blurb, the book shatters the basis of the theory by showing how key climate equations were incorrectly calculated by a factor of three. If so, the book could be the game-changer it advertises itself to be.

One of the contributors to the book, emeritus professor and nuclear and space scientist Oliver Manuel, writes that his chapter quotes a prescient warning in 1961* from former US President Eisenhower that a federally funded scientific-technological elite might one day take control of government policy and pose a serious threat to ‘the supreme goals of our free society’.

Yup, that was the point of the whole AGW shebang.

*Earlier typo rendered this as 1971: sorry.

The false consciousness of western civilisation

8:32pm

Over at Lapidomedia, Jenny Taylor muses upon the following vignette:

Peter Oborne the Sherborne educatedTelegraph columnist confided to a roomful of academics and Muslim radicals at the East London Mosque today that he’d been beaten 7-5 by his mate the Mayor of London. During the course of which trouncing, on a freezing Highbury tennis court, they’d discussed the launch later in the day of the Exeter University report Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim Hate Crime: UK Case Studies 2010 whose forerunner, the London Case Study, Oborne had gallantly endorsed.

Oborne shared with us his conversation with the Mayor: glossing the famed US academic John Esposito’s sentiment, in the introduction to the report, that ‘the exclusive Judaeo-Christian tradition of the West was an unhelpful and false doctrine’ (I quote) and should be jettisoned. Boris, sensing how convenient that would be

A lethal leak -- or a boomerang?

5:29pm

Remember all those stories which were so prominent in the media coverage of wars between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah/ Hamas, that Israel committed war crimes by targeting for missile strikes ambulances carrying the wounded? Remember Israel’s answer, that the Red Crescent ambulances were transporting arms and missiles under the camouflage of being ambulances? Remember the reaction of the western media, to assume that Hezbollah/Hamas were telling the truth while Israel was lying? Well, throughWikileaks we now learn that, er, Iran used the Red Crescent in war zones:

Iran abused the strict neutrality of the Iranian Red Crescent (IRC) society to smuggle intelligence agents and weapons into other countries, including Lebanon during the 2006 war with Israel,

Bang goes that conspiracy theory...

3:24pm

So now the world has been made aware, thanks to Wikileaks, what anyone with their ear to the ground has known for yonks -- that Saudi Arabia and other Arab states have been desperately pressing the US to bomb Iran. The Guardianreports:

The Saudi king was recorded as having ‘frequently exhorted the US to attack Iran to put an end to its nuclear weapons programme’, one cable stated. ‘He told you [Americans] to cut off the head of the snake,' the Saudi ambassador to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir said, according to a report on Abdullah's meeting with the US general David Petraeus in April 2008.

... Leaders in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egyptreferred to Iran as ‘evil', an
