Prince William and Kate Middleton royal wedding date coincides with Hitler's

wedding anniversary -

and more events in history that happened on April 29th

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton will be a joyous occasion but it also marks the 66th anniversary of the bizarre and macabre union of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun as the Third Reich collapsed.

The Nazi dictator married his long-time mistress deep in the Fuehrer's bunker below Berlin as the Russians closed in. The pair committed suicide together the next day.

Meanwhile, German forces surrendered to the Allies in Italy on April 29, 1945.



Other events in history that happened on April 29 are:

1376: Sir Peter de la Mare was installed as the first Speaker of the House of Commons.

1885: Women were allowed to sit Oxford University examinations.

1901: Emperor Hirohito of Japan was born. He would rule his country throughout the Second World War.

1916: Irish rebels laid down their weapons in Dublin, effectively bringing to an end the Easter Uprising against British rule.

1930: A telephone link was established between Britain and Australia.

1945: Dachau concentration camp in Germany was liberated by the US 7th Army.

1957: The Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis was born.

1958: My Fair Lady opened for its first night in London, with Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins, and Julie Andrews playing Eliza Doolittle.

1963: Andrew Loog Oldham became the manager of the Rolling Stones

1967: Boxer Muhammad Ali was stripped of his heavyweight championship title after refusing induction into the United States Army on religious grounds.

1976: Bruce Springsteen climbed the wall of Graceland to try to meet Elvis Presley, but he was not there.

1980: The master of screen suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, died aged 80.

1986: The Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, was laid to rest alongside her husband, King Edward VIII, at Frogmore in Windsor.

1992: Fierce rioting broke out in Los Angeles after a jury acquitted four white police officers of beating black motorist Rodney King.

April 29 was also the birthday of several famous musicians, including Sir Thomas Beecham (1879), Sir Malcolm Sargent (1895) and Duke Ellington (1889).
