Abdullah Gul, Turkey's president, on Wednesday set out
a democratic vision of a Middle East complete with a
European Union-style organisation to drive economic and
political progress

Will Gul become the Jean Monnet of the MidEast? : )

I don't know what Gul meant. He used to love the EU and
still portrays it as an agent of progress. Even Barroso
must have been astonished to hear his decaying union so
praised by Turkey's president in his official visit to
the UK.

Europe is barren, disorganised and downright hostile.

I prefer the Middle East. The Arabs are a fascinating
people and they watch Turkish soap operas, too. The
Middle East is the birthplace of all the Prophets and
home to the world's greatest proven energy reserves.
As long as it isn't going to be an EU look-alike, with
Brussels inspired ideas and institutions, a MidEast
club is worth looking into. At least it will keep
people's minds away from the bloody EU.
