Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA:
their lives on their line in the struggle to reach Zion is perhaps the most
dramatic and compelling Zionist story of our times. One hopes that this
very dramatic and moving story will find its proper place expressed in
literature, stage and the "silver screen". ]
Cabinet Approves Establishment of Memorial on Mt. Herzl to Commemorate the
Names of the Members of the Ethiopian Community who Perished En Route to
Israel
(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)
The Cabinet today (Sunday), 27.11.11, approved the establishment of a
memorial on Mt. Herzl to commemorate the names of the approximately 4,000
members of the Ethiopian community who perished en route to Israel.
Establishing the memorial closes a cycle for 130,000 members of the
Ethiopian community whose family members – men, women, children and the
elderly – left on the long and arduous journey to Israel and some of whom
perished after suffering shortages of food and water, and from diseases.
The memorial will commemorate the names of those who perished and serve as a
fitting place that enshrines the memory of those who did not realize their
dream of coming to the Land of Israel.
Building the memorial will cost approximately NIS 2 million (NIS 150,000 of
which will be provided by the Jewish Agency).
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that, "I know that the way to the
State of Israel and absorption in it has not always been easy and even today
members of the community are finding certain things difficult, and we are
trying to help them. However, integration has been impressive and it is
encouraging; it gives the essence to this idea of returning to Zion and
combining the absorption of the tribes of Israel. We are working to
implement the desire to absorb here the rest of the Ethiopian Jewish
community It warms my heart to see the faith of thousands of years being
realized."
