Abu Basir Al-Tartusi Calls on Egyptian Citizens to Support Salafi Presidential Candidate Hazem Abu Isma'il

The following report is a complimentary offering from MEMRI's Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor (JTTM.)

On November 25, 2011, senior Salafi-jihadi cleric Sheikh Abu Basir Al-Tartusi published a document on his website in which he called on Egypt's citizens to support the presidential candidacy of Salafi Hazem Abu Isma'il. He provided no justification other than claiming that there would be many advantages to Abu Isma'il's winning the elections and that if he garnered enough support, he could benefit Egypt and even the Arabs and Muslims in general. It should be noted that in principle, the Salafiyya jihadiyya absolutely opposes taking part in any non-shari' political systems.

Hazem Abu Isma'il: "Who says that we do not believe in democracy? We consider democracy to be part of a duality of A and B. Democracy is B, but prior to it, we are all worshippers of Allah. We welcome democracy, as long as it does not run counter to our Lord. For us democracy is sacred and is held in high esteem, which cannot be violated as long as it does not transgress religious prohibitions, as long as it is not against our Lord."
