Many of you have queried the Court Case verdicts on the men who allegedly spray-painted a poppy on a mosque door. I have queried the background to this story and below I attach a reply that a reader has kindly sent in, from the office of his own MP, Austin Mitchell.

Unfortunately, when things start off with “you couldn’t make it up” often it is. A minor point may be, but the level of fine in the first story mentioned is incorrect - it was £500.

But the main thing is, the incident of the poppy on the mosque, actually happened in Hartlepool and the pair were convicted in Durham Crown Court.

I assume Portsmouth has been mentioned as there was a case involving that particular mosque last year, which had a poppy sprayed onto it, as you can see from the picture.

Also the two people involved actually were sentenced to a year in prison, not 6 months.

However spray painting a poppy on a mosque wasn’t the only thing that they’d done. They’d also vandalised other properties and put a brick through a window.
