Double speak in Tehran

Saturday, 1 September, 2012 17:18

An interpreter working for Iranian state television made a series of puzzling errors when translating the Egyptian president's speech at the recent Non-aligned nations conference in Tehran.

Morsi: The peoples of Syria and Palestine are fighting to gain freedom and justice.

Iranian television: The peoples of Bahrain and Palestine are fighting to gain freedom and justice.

Morsi: The Arab Spring began with revolution in Tunisia, from there it spread to Libya and Yemen, and now there is revolution in Syria, too. They are fighting the tyrannical regime there.

Iranian television: The Islamic awakening began with revolution in Tunisia, from there it spread to Libya and Yemen, and now there is revolution in Bahrain, too. They are fighting the tyrannical regime there.

Morsi: The veto has made it impossible for the crisis to be resolved by the United Nations.

Iranian television: The veto (in the Arab world) has made it impossible for popular change and transformations to be resolved by the United Nations.

Morsi: We support the people of Syria who face every kind of tyranny and oppression.

Iranian television: We support the Syrian government against every conspiracy.

Morsi: It is absolutely necessary for the Syrian opposition to unite.

Iranian television: We are in favour of retaining the current Syrian regime which enjoys popular support.
