Subject: Romanian lady wins EXTRA benefit

Firuta Vasile (27) is a Big Issue seller in Bristol.  She came here from Romania in 2007 (thanks to our EU membership which allowed her to take up residence, despite the fact that she didn’t have a job).  She WAS claiming £25,547.60 in tax credits, child benefit, and carers’ allowance, but that’s all about to change.

A court has now ruled that Miss Vasile is also entitled to Housing Benefit (at a minimum of £2,600 a year). No wonder she’s smiling like a basket of chips in those newspaper photos. She’s done very nicely out of the EU’s expansion into the east.  This was the one where Tony Blair predicted that 13,000 or so migrants would come here annually.  In the very first year 130,000 pitched up here.

This isn’t just about Miss Vasile, who has done nothing wrong and has acted within the law.  This is really about two other things.  A case like this becomes a “landmark”, meaning that it opens the door for many more. It’s also about a country having control over its borders, and exercising that control.

In times of plenty, it is stupid and short-sighted to throw open the doors to thousands of migrants (They could be issued with temporary work-permits).  But in days of austerity and cut-backs this is sheer lunacy. The problem is, whilst we’re in the EU we’re stuck with it.  The only escape is via that big door marked EXIT…
