Turkey: Devastating Economic Consequences of Syrian Crisis and Iran Sanctions Regime

'New economic figures just out show that Turkey’s erstwhile rising star as a powerful emerging economy has suddenly taken a plunge. Second-quarter economic data show that the country’s halcyon days of stellar growth of more than 8% during 2010 and 2011 are over.

'The public rift between the American administration and Israel is deepening: earlier today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched an unprecedented attack against the administration, stating that "the world has no right to stop us" (from attacking Iran). It was clear that the quote was directed at President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton, as Netanyahu was referring to the American refusal to declare a "red line" that would lead to an American strike on Iran if crossed. Later – as a result? – it was reported that the White House refused Netanyahu’s request for a meeting with the president.'

Britain Should Leave EU Amid Long-Term Economic Crisis

'In talks to MPs at the Foreign Affairs committee, Cardiff University economist Patrick Minford rejected suggestions that the UK could renegotiate the terms of its membership from within the EU.

He said Britain should “leave” and then negotiate a trading arrangement on a “clean sheet of paper”. Prof Minford warned that the rescue and reform process in the eurozone could take “five to 10 years”.

“We, I think, here tend to overestimate the chances of the euro breaking up. The countries that are most likely to leave in the first instance - say, Greece or Portugal - are absolutely determined to stay in for political reasons”, he said.'
