REPLY TO LORD ASHCROFT

Michael Ashcroft, Tory Peer and former Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party has written a mischievous piece in 'an open letter to Nigel Farage' in the Mail on Sunday today, claiming:

' ........ a Tory Government is the only hope you [Nigel] have of getting a referendum that could make your dreams come true.'

What a stupid man.  The conservatives are the enemies of England.

Ashscroft's theory about Nigel's intentions are, he writes:

'If secession [here Ashcroft is admitting Britain is now a colony of the EU] were the priority, you would get behind the only party with a chance of forming a government that has offered the referendum that makes it possible.'

But Ashcroft''s 'logic' is flawed, so much so, as to make him look infantile.

The flaws are obvious:

1. It is very unlikely the Conservative Party will gain enough seats at the next election to be able to negotiate a coalition with Lib/dems again. It is most likely that New labour will win outright, but if they don't, they will have enough seats for a coalition with Lib/dems.

So suggesting getting behind the Conservatives would be Nigel's best hope of getting a referendum is utterly meaningless.

2. Conservatives, if they were serious about a referendum on membership, would have already held a referendum in this Parliament. They have not, because the offer is just a ploy, they have had referenda on  useless issues such as police commissioners and alternative voting system, but EU?

3. The Conservative record on referendums on the EU has been abysmal. They studiously avoided a referendum in 1972 on joining the, then anti-constitutional Common Market, when that was the right thing to do, they avoided a referendum on the Maastricht Treaty in 1991/2, when the chanes again were anti-constitutional, and it was the right thing to do, and Cameron reneged on the promise ('cast iron guarantee) of a referendum on the anti-constitutional EU Constitution.

Why on earth would Nigel want to get behind the Conservatives on the 'promise' of a referendum in a few years time??

4. Cameron has categorically said he does not want to leave the EU - he likes it. So, in the very unlikely event of the Conservatives holding a referendum on our membership would be sabotaged by a Conservative Party using all the resources of State and the State Broadcaster to ensure that the result was to keep us in.

Nigel has better solution - his own referendum.

2014 will be referendum year - the EU 'Parliamentary' elections - all Nigel needs to do is ensure we come first in those elections and the 'out' majority must help to ensure this happens.

Sorry, Ashcroft's open letter is just a load of tripe.
