A Cosy Relationship Hodge the Dodge Ignores

20130426-085348.jpgSome strong words from Margaret Hodge and the Public Accounts Committee as they release their report on tax avoidance today. Apparently the so-called Big 4 accountancy firms have an “unhealthily cosy relationship with government”, saying it creates a “ridiculous conflict of interest”. Readers will know of Hodge’s great expertise in this area, given that she worked for one of them, Pricewaterhouse, before she became an MP. Not to mention that Hodge’s superiors on the frontbench such as ChukaBalls and Rachel Reeves have all had PwC analysts on their payroll. Guido can reveal that Shadow Treasury ministers Chris Leslie and Cathy Jamieson also currently have PwC employees working in their offices. For some reason Hodge hasn’t said anything about this, you might say, cosy relationship, but then she has form for keeping quiet about awkward questions…

Local Election Big-Mo Based on Crowd Sizes

Ed Miliband has been out and about today campaigning for the local elections:
Ed1
Not content with the small crowd he pulled for his stump speech, he decided to take his message door to door. Car door to door that is. The Merc driver doesn’t look like he’s feeling the pinch too much:
ed2
Talking of crowds, the number of people turning up at UKIP events cannot go unnoticed. Farage is consistently pulling these numbers, with overflow rooms having to be set up on his Partridge-sounding “Common Sense Tour”:

Who looks like they have got the momentum in this election?

Majority of Papers Reject Royal Charter

The majority of the newspaper industry has rejected the Royal Charter. They will submit their own rival version to the Queen. Full details from the World at One:
  • All national papers except Indy and Guardian have signed up to alternate charter free from political interference, but Indy andGuardian editors think this is a good idea “to get the ball rolling”and “reopen” the conversation.
  • Principle of Royal Charter accepted, but on own terms.
  • Fines up to £1 million for systematic wrongdoing.
  • Full and prominent corrections.
  • Open and transparent appointment of members to independent overseeing board.
  • Public involvement in code of practice.
Evan Harris isn’t going to be happy…
UPDATE:
The Editors of the Times and Sunday Times, as well as the the Managing Editor and CEO of News International have all put out video statements explaining the new plan. Here.
