Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the 65th anniversary of Israel’s Independence

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day:
“I would like to extend my warmest greetings to everyone celebrating the 65th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel.

- The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Americans for Peace and Tolerance (APT) are at odds over the presence of anti-Israel materials in the public school system of Newton, Mass.
APT—a Boston-based nonprofit “dedicated to promoting peaceful coexistence in an ethnically diverse America by educating the American public about the need for a moderate political leadership that supports tolerance and core American values in communities across the nation”—is calling for reforms in Newton schools to prevent the reappearance of those materials, most notably the Arab World Studies Notebook, which claims that Israeli soldiers murdered hundreds of Palestinian nurses in Israeli prisons.

possible hostile moves, and noted that the Leader is “well aware” of the
Iranian Armed Forces’ capability.

The upheavals of 2011-2012 across the Middle East and North Africa swept aside secular rulers and the established political order with startling speed, and continue to focus world attention on the revolutionary forces driving these far-reaching events. Poverty, oppression, inequality, and lack of individual freedom are all hallmarks of the societal stagnation that has gripped the Islamic world for the better part of fourteen centuries, but the driving force of the so-called “Arab Spring” is a resurgent Islam, dominated by the forces of al-Qa’eda and the Muslim Brotherhood. Energized as Islam may be at this time, however, without the active involvement of the United States to help arm[1], fund[2], support[3], and train[4] the region’s Islamic rebels, it is questionable whether they could have gotten this far, this fast.

The State of Israel honored the memory of 25,578 fallen soldiers and victims of terror attacks Sunday. An official ceremony opened in the Kotel, in the presence of President Shimon Peres , IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz , Police Chief Yohanan Danino.
President Peres said: “We will never forget those who allowedIsrael to be great; those who during the last 65 years of the State’s existence protected it with their bodies, blood and spirit – securing its borders and citizens.”
