The EU's highest court has rejected complaints from Spain and Italy about the legality and fairness of plans for an EU unitary patent framework.

TISA: platforms could choose to 'swallow' cost of tax owed from rebates rather than incur 'throw away' systems cost
Platforms will have to decide whether it is worth the "throw away" cost of developing systems that allow them to calculate how much tax customers owe for the rebates they receive or whether they should just "swallow" those costs themselves, according to an industry specialist.

European Parliament approves bonus cap and stronger capital requirements for banks
Stricter capital requirements and more stringent supervision will apply to European banks from the start of next year after the European Parliament voted through a "comprehensive" programme of banking reform.

European Parliament narrowly rejects carbon "backloading" plans
The European Parliament has narrowly voted to reject a temporary fix for the EU's struggling Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), claiming that the proposals would "undermine confidence" in the system.

Increase in late payments to pension schemes could signal trouble for employers, says expert
A 35% increase in the number of employers making late payments into their company pension schemes could be indicative of wider economic problems ahead, an expert has warned.

HMRC publishes "more practical" guidance on application of GAAR
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has published updated guidance on how the new general anti-abuse rule (GAAR) will work.  The revised guidance has now been approved by the Interim GAAR Advisory Panel.
