The UK National Defence Association has instituted an annual Memorial Lecture in honour of our late Vice-President and Board member, Brigadier Richard Holmes CBE TD JP, who died in 2011. Prof Richard Holmes was an active and dedicated member of the UKNDA from the time of the Association's formation in 2007 onwards. He was also, of course, one of the nation's foremost military historians.
The inaugural Richard Holmes Memorial Lecture will be held on Thursday 23rd May 2013 at 18:00hrs at: The Guards Museum, Wellington Barracks, Birdcage Walk, London SW1E 6HQ. We are delighted to announce that this inaugural lecture will be given by the distinguished historian, author and broadcaster, Prof Jeremy Black OBE FRHistS, Professor of History at the University of Exeter and Vice-President of the UKNDA. His subject will be "The role of force in British history".
Professor Black is a highly acclaimed military historian, and among his many published works are: "A History of the British Isles", "The Great War and the Making of the Modern World", "Naval Power: A History of Warfare and the Sea", "Crisis of Empire: Britain and America in the Eighteenth Century", "The Hanoverians", "The War of 1812 in the Age of Napoleon", "An Introduction to Global Military History" and "Avoiding Armageddon: From the Great War to the Fall of France, 1918-40".
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception and an opportunity for a private viewing of the exhibits in the Guards Museum. There is no charge for attending this event but in order to help us defray the costs we are inviting UKNDA members and guests to make a voluntary contribution of £10 each on arrival. If you would like to attend please email pro@uknda.org and indicate whether or not you will be bringing any guests.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope that you will be able to attend this important event to honour Prof Richard Holmes, a great military historian and a much-missed stalwart of the UKNDA.
