U.S. biofuel plants go bankrupt on feedstock costs: Soaring corn and soy prices on top of rising construction costs and tight credit markets have pushed about a dozen U.S. biofuel plants to file for bankruptcy protection, experts said.

The Military-Industrial Complex. It's Much Later Than You Think.

The Military-Industrial Complex.

It's Much Later Than You Think.
By Chalmers Johnson

28/07/08 "Tom Dispatch" -- -Most Americans have a rough idea what the term "military-industrial complex" means when they come across it in a newspaper or hear a politician mention it. President Dwight D. Eisenhower introduced the idea to the public in his farewell address of January 17, 1961. "Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime," he said, "or indeed by the fighting men of World War II and Korea… We have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions… We must not fail to comprehend its grave implications… We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex."

Although Eisenhower's reference to the military-industrial complex is, by now, well-known, his warning against its "unwarranted influence" has, I believe, largely been ignored. Since 1961, there has been too little serious study of, or discussion of, the origins of the military-industrial complex, how it has changed over time, how governmental secrecy has hidden it from oversight by members of Congress or attentive citizens, and how it degrades our Constitutional structure of checks and balances.

Thar She Blows.

The Last Hurrah for the Banking System.

By Mike Whitney

28/07/08 "ICH" --- The Bush administration will be mailing out another batch of "stimulus" checks in the very near future. There's no way around it. The Fed is in a pickle and can't lower interest rates for fear that food and energy prices will shoot to stratosphere. At the same time, the economy is shrinking faster than anyone thought possible with no sign of a rebound. That leaves stimulus checks as the only way to "prime the pump" and keep consumer spending chugging along. Otherwise business activity will slow to a crawl and the economy will tank. There's no other choice.

Crumbling narratives and revenge of the media
The Spectator's Coffee House blog today has Peter Hoskin talking about the storm engulfing Labour and threatening to sink the SS Gordon Brown. Hoskin refers to pieces by Rachel Sylvester and Bruce Anderson about Brown and observes that:

"...it's fascinating just how rapidly the mainstream narrative of "he's a decent guy" is crumbling. Until recently, the attacks on Gordon Brown have largely been political. Now things are getting extremely personal indeed."
It took a long time, but the media has finally woken up and realised that the Brown legend was nothing more than a narrative. It is not just the deceit around Brown supposedly being a personable and friendly man to work with that has been exploded. More significantly, the carefully crafted image of Brown being a Chancellor who single handedly protected and nurtured the economy, bringing about a golden age of growth and prosperity, has been torn down to reveal the reality and consequences of Brown's tenure in No.11.

Yes, the economy has grown since Labour came to power in 1997. Crucially the economy was growing before that, under the Conservatives, who had taken the painful steps necessary to put the British economy on the right course. Brown simply kept the ship pointing in the same general direction. But as he did so, he was tossing valuable cargo overboard and racking up ridiculous amounts of debt that will have to be paid back sometime.

This is my last post. Host Monster, the server where I had moved the blogwww.larrysinclair0926.com to has deleted the site from their servers and will not host my web site any longer. Host Monster explained to me that they will cooperate with me and Mr. Sibley and provide Mr. Sibley with all information on those who visited the site and all attempts made to access the files and controls on the site. I am faxing the release authorization as I type this. Host Monster states that they do not wish to continue to Host my site as they have spent more time on complaints in the short period of time I was on that server than they have in the time they have been in business.

Host Monster stated it is not worth the harassment and resources expended.

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the "Barack Obama's US of A"

I will end this post with a thought, if what I have said is untrue, then why is it that every blog and web site I have had has been attacked and the servers pressured into shutting them down? Why has so much time, effort and money been put into threatening, attacking me and my family? Why is it that Barack Obama does not have the guts to say I am lying?

After strategic Mt. Sannine, Hizballah seizes Lebanese Mt. Barukh

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

July 29, 2008, 11:03 AM (GMT+02:00)

Hizballah has moved on since its seizure of the towering Mount Sannine, the highest point of the Mount Lebanon range – which was first revealed by DEBKAfile.
As Iranian and Syrian radar and anti-air weapons officers settled on the strategic peak, our military sources report the Lebanese terrorist group proceeded to grab positions on the Western ridge of Jebel Barukh, east of Jezzine, a move which brings it closer to the Israel border.
(Click on the map accompanying this article).
Perched atop Lebanon's two tallest mountain peaks, Hizballah, Syria and Iran are able to control most of Israel's air space to the south and the heartlands of Lebanon's Christian centers, as well as Mediterranean coastal waters.
Contrary to the picture presented by Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert to the Knesset foreign affairs and defense committee Monday, July 28 ("Hizballah leader Hassan Nasrallah is losing his self-confidence"), Hizballah is back in strength in the military enclaves circled in the accompanying map, where its war preparations proceed apace.
These enclaves are off-limits to civilians.
Scores of military bases have arisen around three main centers close to the Israeli border at Marjayun, Nabatiya and Hasbaya. Marked on the map are two lines of fortifications and large-scale concentrations of fighting strength:

Stop Oil Speculation Now
Dateline USA....

Caught between the interests of environmental extremists and greedy Wall Street speculators, ordinary Americans have no chance. The Washington Post reported Monday:

Big Wall Street firms representing the interests of pension funds, endowments and wealthy individuals around the country have grown in just a few years from minor participants in the oil markets to their most dominant force.

The agency that regulates commodity trading has been tracking some of the activities of these investors. But a year and a half ago, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission decided to keep that information secret, rebuffing thousands of requests from industry groups and individuals to make the data public. The CFTC noted in a report that only one group supported this decision: the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, which lobbies on behalf of the Wall Street firms.

The biggest financial speculators, called swap dealers, trade "futures contracts" that allow them to make money by betting on the price commodities will fetch in the future. They rarely take delivery of the goods themselves. In 2000, swap dealers held about 140,000 oil contracts, according to CFTC data obtained by a House Energy and Commerce Committee investigation. That has surged to about 1.8 million today, including a three-fold jump since 2006.

Engendering provocation
12:33am

In the Times, the inimitable William Rees Mogg decides that the person who should be leading the Labour party and running the country is Britain's answer to Madame Mao, Harriet Harperson. Rees Mogg writes:
It seems to me that a woman candidate would, from her gender, have a better chance of doing that than any of the men.
The response to this compliment by the woman in question was to announce a proposed change in the law which, as far as I can see, will mean that if a woman kills her husband she will get away with it whereas if a man kills his wife he will be convicted of murder. Doubtless by the time G.Brown gets back from holiday, Harperson will have helped resolve the leadership crisis by ensuring that every man in the country is behind bars.

The international community has pledged $8 billion in aid to the Palestinians. Now a Palestinian human rights agency has detailed systematic torture carried out by the 'moderate' Fatah in the West Bank as well as by Hamas in Gaza. The Jerusalem Post reports what happened to detainees in the West Bank, according to the al Haq human rights group:
