Gray contests Labour leadership
The race to find a new Scottish Labour Party leader is under way after
former minister Iain Gray announced he was standing in the contest.
The move came after party officials met to set out the timetable.
There will also be a deputy leadership election after Cathy Jamieson
quit the job after more than seven years.
Ms Jamieson, along with Andy Kerr, are thought to be the leadership
front-runners. Mr Gray was the first to officially announce he was
standing.
The process of selecting a successor to Wendy Alexander, who resigned
from the post last month, had been delayed until after the Glasgow East
by-election.
Mr Gray, MSP for East Lothian, declared his intention to seek
nominations after a meeting of Labour's procedures committee.
Charlie Gordon wants to stand but may be damaged by his role in
soliciting the illegal campaign donation which finished Ms Alexander

Fellow MSPs, Ken Macintosh and Charlie Gordon, may also stand, if they
can secure sufficient nominations.
Mr Gray said on Monday he could offer his party "a new voice and a fresh
start" as leader.
"Labour must re-establish trust with voters across Scotland by focussing
on what matters to them, by working together as a party - across all
levels - and by proving ourselves in holding the SNP administration to
account more effectively," he said.
The new leadership team will be unveiled on 13 September and MSPs have

Roubini: 'Worst' Recession in Decades Ahead
Wednesday, July 23, 2008 8:30 AM
The U.S. is in for the "worst" recession in decades, one that may well be more severe than the downturn that followed the stock market bubble in 2001 and the savings and loan crisis of 1991, says Nouriel Roubini, former Clinton White House economist.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Roubini, now a university professor, says the recession will be a result of a downturn in consumer spending.
Roubini says the remarkable rally of financial stocks when better than expected results from Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, and Citi soothed the fears that major financial institutions were in even more distress than market analysts predicted "is just another temporary bear market rally that will fizzle away once the onslaught of bad financial and macro news builds up again."
The condition of financial firms and banks are much worse than the news suggests. When the additional bad news comes out, the U.S. will experience a systemic financial crisis, he says.
Here's why Roubini thinks that is likely, if not probable:
"Since residential investment is only 5 percent of even a worsening housing market, recession cannot by itself trigger an economy-wide recession," said Roubini. "Rather, since private consumption is over 70 percent of aggregate demand, a sharp and persistent slowdown in consumption growth below 1 percent or even negative is necessary to trigger a full-blown recession."

Empowering Americans for Energy Independence
Senate Majority leader Harry Reed has been telling Americans that they should not even try to drill their way out of an energy crises nor should they look to using coal because Reed claims "coal sickens people". Reed is totally and deliberately ignoring environmentally sound processes developed by major US companies including but not limited to Exxon/Mobile, Syntroleum (Tulsa, OK), and Tennessee Eastman that are economically and technically viable to produce liquid and gaseous fuels from coal with greatly reduced and controlled low........

The principles of national domestic violence policy were established in the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), a law crafted by the ABA and steered by the ABA Commission On Domestic Violence (CODV). Federal provisions were subsequently implemented at the state level via pass-through funding requirements and by ensuring that federal funding is channeled only by radical feminist non-governmental organizations........

Met chief's conduct investigated... Record deficit for next president...

Met chief's conduct investigated
The head of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Ian Blair, is to be
investigated over a Scotland Yard contract awarded to a company owned by
a friend of his.
The inquiry will determine whether Sir Ian's conduct in the matter met
the required standards detailed in the Police Code of Conduct.
The Met Police Authority (MPA) has been researching a contract given in
2003 to the consultancy firm Impact Plus.
Sir Ian said he was "open" about his friendship with boss Andrew Miller.
An internal audit report into the contract was considered by the MPA's
Professional Standards Cases Sub-committee on Monday.
I am on record as saying that I reject any suggestion that I
have behaved inappropriately and that remains my position
Sir Ian Blair
The sub-committee subsequently decided to ask the Home Secretary to
appoint an investigating officer to examine whether Sir Ian's
involvement in the procurement process broke any rules.
Reshard Auladin, chair of the sub-committee, said: "This decision does
not imply any finding of wrong doing by the commissioner, but is made to
ensure that all the facts are independently and thoroughly
investigated."
In response to the announcement Sir Ian said: "I welcome this inquiry
and will of course be co-operating fully with it.
"As I have previously made clear, I consider that I was open and
straightforward in informing both the MPS and the MPA about my
relationship with someone who was subsequently awarded a contract with
the MPS.

"TOUGH LOVE FOR ISRAEL"
by Emanuel A. Winston,
Freeman Center Middle East Analyst & Commentator
I have been watching the newer form of anti-Semitism ramp up for some time. It's well beyond the tactic where anti-Zionism replaced anti-Semitism. It's the "Yea, But!" semantics.
Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times writes an OP-ED July 24, 2008 wherein he recommends "Tough Love for Israel". That statement could easily come from the mouths of Zbigniew Brzezinski, James Baker III or any of the State Department diplomats who now work for the Saudis.
There are several components in the "NewSpeak" for dedicated anti-Semites. They can't rail against Jews like a village priest at Easter, urging ignorant peasantry to rush out of church and into a joyous pogrom, attacking the Jewish Ghetto. Pillaging, raping and murdering Jews was sanctioned by the Church but, that was then.
Now the ravings take the form of issuing advise to the Jews to pacify and appease their enemies. Although the pogroms are no longer marked necessarily with pitch-forks, axes and butcher knives (except when they can) now it comes with rifles, explosives, bulldozers, kidnaping, bus bombs and torture.
We have been given a choice between war and shame, we have chosen shame and we will get war."
As President Bush and our "great" state department have done a 180 degree turn and,
have adopted the proposed policies of Senator Obama,
by engaging in "peace and surrender talks" to Iran.
The very same policies of Neville Chamberlain in the 1930s.
There no longer is an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Arabia. America has already sold out Israel with its pledge to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.
In 1967 after the six day war Abba Eban (a person on the left) commented "As we looked around us we saw the world divided between those who are seeking our destruction and those who would do nothing to prevent it."
Nothing has changed.
America by its actions if not its words have betrayed their faithful ally just as Great Britain betrayed its ally Czechoslavakia.
The words of Churchill come right back to haunt me and Walid as it should do every free loving person of the West.
"We have been given a choice between war and shame, we have chosen shame and we will get war."
No more than 63 years after the end of World War 2 the world is repeating the identical mistake. God Help us all.

Residential Landlords
With the continuing decline of the property market, a significant number of sellers are delaying putting their properties up for sale preferring instead to attempt to "ride out the storm". Whilst this approach may be advisable in a limited number of cases, residential landlords should consider carefully if it is time to close the storm shutters or if now is a good time to trade-up their property portfolios.
It would appear that property prices will continue to fall into 2009 and whilst it is inevitable that some people will make a profit by holding out to the bitter end i.e. buying property when the market finally hits rock bottom; they may have passed up the opportunities that could arise in the coming few months.
An oft-forgotten fact is that sellers can read the market just as easily as buyers; and some attractive deals will be coming up (sooner rather than later) as sellers decide to liquidate their portfolios either to "cash out" before the market bottoms out, or simply to reinvest while their target properties are more affordable in terms of a percentage of their buying (or lending) ability.
