Finding the right solution?Avoid deadly fadsBlind bureaucracy that condemns a fishing community to death, writes Maurice Neligan
AS SOMEBODY who voted Yes in the recent referendum, it is becoming increasingly clear to me why so many voted No. It is not so obvious, however, as to why the establishment failed to foresee the outcome.
When Robert Kennedy was US Attorney General, he wrote, "one-fifth of the people are against everything all the time".
The proportion here may be even higher. Broad brush strokes would place Sinn Féin, the extreme left and right, unhappy Greens and various flat earthers longing for a return to a mythical past into this grouping.
Every red herring from God's will to neutrality was expounded zealously by them. Logic and reasoned argument are not going to reach this group - ideologies are not susceptible to such persuasion. These people and their disparate causes did not win the referendum although they claim the credit.
Rather the varied concerns of very many people, uncommitted and indifferent, even hostile, to these groupings were the main reasons for the No vote.

It's a mad, mad world.
Readers may be intrigued by a headline in the IHT retailing a report from AP, telling us that, "South African says it will shift energy policy from coal to combat climate change."
The thrust of this piece is that the South African government has declared that it is planning to move away from cheap "dirty" coal as its primary source of energy accounting for nearly 90 percent of its electricity - and embrace nuclear and renewable energy "in a bid to combat climate change".
However, less than a week ago, we recall a report that pointed out that South Africa was forecasting a 100 million ton shortfall of coal by 2017, and, unless its government restricted its exports, its local supplies would suffer.
Add to that little snippet, the information that the biggest customer for South African coal is Germany. Then note a report from last year reminding us that Germany is to shut down all of its 17 nuclear power plants - currently its biggest source of electricity - by the early 2020s and that coal will cease to be mined in that country by 2018.
Also note another report which tells us that, to replace its nuclear power, German utility companies are planning to set up a total of 26 new coal-fired power plants. As a result, Germany will need to increase its demand for coal from abroad from around 30.6 million tons a year to 56-66 million tons by 2020 the bulk of it to be imported from South Africa, which is planning to increase its export capacity by 20 million tons a year.
Will McCain Step Aside?
Will McCain Step Aside?
Dateline USA....
Some Republican bigwigs are plotting a coup against their party's presumptive Presidential candidate, John McCain.
The plotters believe the Arizona Senator is hopelessly outmatched by the Democrats' Barack Obama; so they want McCain to step adide for "health reasons"--i.e. the health and safety and very survival of the GOP.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is the preferred replacement.

The BBC is biased in India too...
"What is interesting is that the BBC is not reluctant to report an accusation almost as if it were an established fact but cannot bring itself to report an established fact that the torching of the train was a premeditated act of Islamic terrorism"
Read about it here. I think someone pointed this one out in the comments on this site, too.

Recycle blitz targets shops, offices and parks
Published Date: 29 July 2008

NEW laws could make it illegal not to have recycling facilities in workplaces and public areas, including shopping centres, lay-bys and beaches.
The Scottish Government says 80 per cent of people now recycle at home, and it wants to make sure they do not have to change their habits when they go to work or out for the day.
Legislation, out for consultation, could be brought in that applies to retailers, shopping centres, airports, beaches, car parks, cinemas, entertainment sites, parks, lay-bys, sports stadia and government buildings. Owners or occupiers would have to provide recycling facilities, arrange for material to be taken away and keep track of amounts collected.
If they failed to comply, they could be penalised.
The measures, aimed at helping Scotland come close to being a zero-waste country, were welcomed by environment groups.
However, there are concerns among businesses worried about being penalised if they fail to comply.
Other measures considered in the report include setting new targets for reducing packaging and forcing companies to buy recycled materials. It also suggests bringing back "deposit and reward" schemes to pay consumers for returning bottles.
Richard Lochhead, the environment secretary, said in the consultation document that he was aiming to change the way Scotland regards its waste.

Senator Obama is definitely proving that he stands for "change." He has "changed" his position on campaign financing, the D.C. gun ban, etc.
When he was young, Obama, no doubt protested American relations with right-wing Central American dictators who oppressed their people. But as a presidential candidate today, he has hypocritically "changed" and hasn't threatened to cut off relations with Communist Chinese dictators who oppress their people.
I predict Obama will also "change" his 16-month timetable for withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from Iraq. It's logistically not possible to get all American troops and their equipment out of Iraq in 16 months. For example, much of the equipment will have to be sealifted from a single port in Kuwait, where it will first have to be cleaned after a long journey from encampments all over Iraq. Someone should inform Obama of this.
The man is staggeringly ignorant about Afghanistan as well. In a July 20, 2008 interview, CBS reporter Lara Logan asked Obama about Osama bin Laden and the Taliban leadership still being free in Pakistan. Obama replied, "If we hadn't taken our eye off the ball, we might have caught them before they got into Pakistan."

Now we understand why the Democrats stubbornly refuse to drill responsibly: these Gods from the bowels of Hell are going to force Americans into further financial distress in order to push their lunatic "green" agenda (drilling in ANWR will "kill the environment") and the big hoax known as global warming.......

Dear Friends in Britain, You may like to read in electronic form below an important article on the Lisbon Treaty which Conservative Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague had in last Saturday's Irish Times, the principal "quality" daily paper in the Republic of Ireland.
As you probably know, the Yes-side elements in last month's Lisbon Treaty referendum in Ireland are contemplating holding a second referendum next spring on the same Treaty, in the hope of inducing Irish voters to reverse the result of their 12 June No vote, so enabling Lisbon to be ratified. The Irish Government is under heavy pressure from France, Germany and the Brussels Commission to follow such a course.
This pressure is expected to intensify at the next EU "summit" meetings in October and December, as all the other 26 EU States are likely to have ratified the Lisbon Treaty by the year's end, and that fact will be used to put pressure on the Irish Government to hold a Lisbon Two referendum.
The British Government deposited the instrument of ratification of Lisbon in Rome the other week, even though there was absolutely no hurry about doing this, as two legal actions were on foot in the British courts challenging the ratification and the Government knew that Irish voters had rejected the Treaty. The British Government thus deliberately added to the pressure on Ireland.
