Brown faces new by-election
The death of John MacDougall, the Scottish Labour MP, will trigger another crucial by-election for Gordon Brown. The 60-year-old MP for Glenrothes, who had been suffering from Mesothelioma, an incurable form of cancer, died at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife early this morning .
MacDougall, who had a low profile in the Commons, held a majority of 10,664 over the Scottish National Party at the last election. However Glenrothes, which is literally in the Prime Minister's political backyard (near his own Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath seat and close to his constituency home), is now vulnerable. The SNP, who were second in Glenrothes in 2005, need only a swing of 14.5 per cent.
In last month's Glasgow East by-election, the SNP overturned a Labour majority of more than 13,000 with a 22 per cent swing.
