What an extraordinary discussion the Today programme (0810) has just broadcast on the Jonathan Ross/Russell Brand scandal. The affair is still dominating the front pages. There are revelations that part of the offending item about Andrew Sachs that wascut out and not broadcast featured Ross suggesting, in explicit detail, that the two of them perform a sex act on Andrew Sachs to ‘apologise’ for their offence. Some 27,000 people have now complained to the BBC for what was broadcast. Brand has resigned. The BBC Director-General, Mark Thompson, has finally cut short his holiday and expedited the BBC inquiry into the affair, with the Trust meeting today to consider it. Well, well. The power of the press, eh? From the BBC website:Russell Brand has resigned from his Radio 2 programme following prank calls he made with Jonathan Ross to actor Andrew Sachs. It follows a public apology from Ross over his ‘juvenile and thoughtless remarks’ in the calls. Earlier, it was announced the pair would be suspended and all their shows taken off air until the BBC has investigated the calls made on Radio 2.
If Ross still keeps his own job it will be a disgrace. Brand was small beer by comparison. Ross is the one with the contract to trouser £18 million of licence-fee payers’ money in order to subject them to an unstoppable tide of smut and obscenity; it was Ross who first made the vile remark on Andrew Sachs’s voicemail....
