However, last summer, a glimpse of the future confronted them. At $4.20 per gallon of gas, they squirmed on their wallets while complaining, “These prices are insane, ridiculous, crazy….” When a barrel of oil reached $140.00 in August 2008, Americans limited their driving, so much so, they drove 12 million less miles that month. They bought more fuel efficient cars. They carpooled. They clamored for alternative fuels. “We must move toward wind, solar, nuclear and coal for our energy needs,” screamed our politicians. “We must provide for future generations and keep our economy growing.” I remember last year when George Bush, our brilliant, intellectual and astoundingly popular 43rd president stated, “We’ll drop oil use by 20 percent in 10 years by hybrid cars, bio-fuels, alternative energy and conservation.” What the that lame-brained president didn’t tell the America people–at current immigration levels, we’ll add 30 million people to the USA in ten years—thus negating any energy conservation. But let’s return to the phrase, “…and keep our economy growing.” That means to keep our population growing in order to create more production, consumption and use of natural resources. What those politicians fail to tell you: our non-renewable energy resources dwindle while our population accelerates on its way to adding 100 million people in the next 30 years and six million added to Colorado by mid century. Nonetheless, everyone thinks alternative energies will take up the slack when the planet runs out of oil in the near future. How soon? The Hubbert Curve shows the planet hitting Peak Oil Extraction by 2010. From there, no matter how many wells we drill, the planet’s supply declines inexorably toward zero. So, can alternative energies save our civilization? Let’s find out. Rocky Mountain News journalist John Rebchook wrote an excellent report on “Industrial hub a Colorado bright spot for clean energy and high paying jobs” this past Saturday. Rebchook quoted Martin Shields, an economist from Colorado State University, “It’s definitely a bright spot for the Colorado economy that is helping offset job reductions elsewhere.” He bragged up the fact that the industrial parks creating the wind machines gobbled 1,500 acres of land while another one, Great Western Industrial Park devoured 3,000 acres of habitat. Most folks do not realize that 100,000 acres suffer concrete and asphalt annually in Colorado and 2.19 million acres suffer destruction across the USA—year in and year out! To bring you a sobering reality, according to a Denver Post report, Colorado lost 1.65 million acres of land in the last 20 years and expects to lose 3.1 million acres by 2022—all caused by hyper-population growth. But the question remains, can we provide alternative energy for our exploding human population expansion? According to Michael Brownlee, www.transitionbouldercounty.org: “We face a Perfect Storm with the triangulation of Peak Oil, Climate Change and Economic Instability,” Brownlee said. “These converging factors create a dynamic that we are unprepared for. James Howard Kunstler addresses them in his book, “The Long Emergency.”” Brownlee demonstrated how humans on a global scale wreak havoc on the natural world by producing, “…bigger, faster and more as they eat up the land, fowl the biosphere, lose connection with the earth, sky and water–and each other. We have lost our sacred connection to all life and with spirit.” After “Peak Oil” hits in places like Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other countries exporting oil in 2009, they will export only 10 percent in the coming years. That will leave America, currently importing 60 percent of the 20 million barrels of oil it burns daily, out of luck. For more information: www.oildrum.com Brownlee said, “In our plausible future, we can expect $200 a barrel by 2010 and on toward $300 a barrel. Any alternatives cannot come on line fast enough or equal the power of oil.” To show how much energy oil provides the U.S. annually, Brownlee provided a graph of one cubic mile of oil. That’s how much the USA burns annually. That equals the same amount of energy provided by 52 nuclear power plants generating energy being built every year for 50 years or 104 operating coal-fired electrical plants built every year for 50 years or 32,000 wind turbines built every year for 50 years and in continuous operation or 91,250,000 solar panels built every year for 50 years. In other words, oil produces dramatically incredible amounts of energy that we cannot and will not be able to duplicate in the coming years. Thus, when the oil runs out, our civilization, as they say, faces Hobson’s Choice: if we turn left, we walk over a cliff; if we turn right, we walk into quicksand. I invite journalists at the RMN and DP to interview experts working toward a “Colorado Population Stabilization Policy”; “Colorado Water Usage Policy”; and “Colorado Environmental Impact Policy”. We cannot keep expanding industrial parks that eat up farmland that provides food for humans and animals. We cannot continue hyper-population growth that destroys any chance for future generations for a viable life experience. We must prevent more Rebchook reports that celebrate population growth, “Windsor, mostly a bedroom community, is one of the fastest-growing towns in Colorado. Its population in 2007 of 17,310 was 75 percent higher than the 9,896 people in 2000.” If Windsor kept growing like that, it would equal another Denver in the next 40 years! Reality check: Colorado does not possess enough water or energy to sustain another city the size of Denver. We must move toward a stable, sustainable population whether we like it or not.
