Iceland Hires Anti-Corruption Crusader

The Government of Iceland has appointed Norwegian-French Magistrate Eva Joly--a veteran anti-corruption crusader--as a special adviser on the investigation of cases linked to the country’s economic collapse. 

Joly, who was born in Oslo, specialised in financial affairs during her studies in France. In 1990 she joined the High Court of Paris as an investigating judge. She quickly made a mark by taking on, among others, former minister Bernard Tapie and the bank Crédit Lyonnais. Her most famous case was that of France’s leading oil company – Elf Aquitaine. In the face of death threats, she carried on the case to uncover several cases of fraud. 

Joly now works as a special advisor to the Norwegian government on money laundering and campaigns for tougher international action against fraud.

 

Ahmadinejad Says Capitalism Close to Collapse

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told regional leaders meeting in Tehran on Wednesday to discuss the global economic crisis that the capitalist system was close to collapse.

Opening a one-day summit of the 10-nation Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) including Turkey, Pakistan and other countries, he also suggested a "single currency" should be used in trade between the group's members.

"After the collapse of the closed socialist economy, the capitalist economy is also on the verge of collapse," Ahmadinejad said in his televised speech. "The liberal economy and the free market have failed."
