IAEA wants to inspect three secret Syrian nuclear sites

The new IAEA report on Iran's formerly secret uranium enrichment site at Fordo near Qom also includes a section on Syria and a demand to inspect suspicious sites there too. The inspectors clearly suspect both Tehran and Damascus of concealing from the UN nuclear watchdog secret facilities related to nuclear weapons production.

Tuesday, Nov. 17, an IAEA delegation will challenge Damascus' refusal to open three suspect sites to inspection.

The UN nuclear watchdog's report on its inspection of Iran's second uranium enrichment site near Qom says that Tehran's belated declaration of its existence raises questions about more still secret facilities. Iran claimed building of the Fordu facility had begun in 2007 and its notification to the IAEA was therefore timely. The inspectors in its still restricted report refute this claim after finding that work began five years earlier in 2002.

The Press Trust of India news agency reported that nuclear plants were put on alert Monday, Nov. 16 in the wake of the arrests in the United States of two suspects of complicity in the Mumbai attacks a year ago in which 171 people were killed. Headley is believed to have visited Indian states with nuclear sites during an advance surveillance tour of the Mumbai targets.
