They can't keep the streets clear of ice and snow. In some areas – mine included – they didn't collect the rubbish for weeks. Peripatetic social services and many other local authority functions have not operated since Christmas.

Yet – at least according to the Lib Dims - we are going to have to pay higher council council tax and services face cuts.

Why? Ah! We have to plug "the looming £60 billion hole in local government pensions," so our dedicated local authority officers can continue to retire on full salary pensions schemes, to live out their days in comfort and financial security.

And the reason we should not rise up and slaughter them all is?

Zac Goldsmith, the multi-millionaire Conservative parliamentary candidate, says he "hates politics" and does not want to spend his time with politicians.

So, we have a man who works for the Conservative Party, who co-wrote the Conservative's report for its "Quality of Life Policy Group", who campaigns endlessly on green issues, who is a close associate of David Cameron and who, himself, wants to become a member of Parliament.

And a person who does all these things is called a ...?
