2. Corrupt WHO Seeks Global Tax On Internet Activity To Benefit Pharma
The World Health Organization (WHO) is considering a plan to ask governments to impose a global consumer tax on such things as Internet activity or everyday financial transactions like paying bills online. The multibillion-dollar "indirect consumer tax" is only one of a "suite of proposals" for financing the rapid transformation of the global medical industry that will go before WHO's 34-member supervisory Executive Board at its biannual meeting in Geneva. The idea is the most lucrative of a number of schemes proposed by a 25-member panel of medical experts, academics and health care bureaucrats who have been working for the past 14 months at WHO's behest on "new and innovative sources of funding".

3. UK GPs Refuse Swine Flu Vaccine For Children
Fewer than one in 10 children under five have been vaccinated against swine flu, according to figures released by the Government which show the second phase of the outbreak is all but over. The tiny uptake among children under five, to whom the vaccination campaign was extended before Christmas, appears to vindicate GP leaders' reluctance to sign up to a national deal linking pay to the under fives' vaccination. GPs appear to have their work cut out to convince millions of parents to bring their children forward, with many having been put off by fears over the vaccine’s safety.

4. Pharma's Vaccine Epidemic Goes Into Freefall
The boom in vaccine sales is perfectly illustrated by the performance of GSK's vaccines division in the fourth quarter. The division shipped almost £835m-worth of pandemic vaccines to governments during the period, compared with a mere £66m the year before. But this giant leap in sales could be about to come to a juddering halt if more governments follow Germany's lead and cut previously agreed orders. This could be ominous for the vaccines market as its impressive growth over the past few years is directly related to governments' willingness to pay most of the costs.

5. Girl Blinded By Call Centre Tamiflu Drug Didn't Have Swine Flu
Disabled: Samantha Millard had an allergic reaction
to Tamiflu which left her blistered and battling blindness
A teenage girl left disabled by the swine flu treatment Tamiflu did not even have the virus, it was revealed today. Samantha Millard, 19, became critically ill after suffering a severe allergic reaction to the tablets, which she took on the advice of the controversial NHS helpline. Within 72 hours of taking three pills, doctors put her on life support. ‘They have disabled my daughter from that helpline,’ said the 42-year-old, who is now her daughter's full-time carer. A leading health expert also claimed last week that the swine flu outbreak was a 'false pandemic' driven by drug companies that stood to make billions of pounds from a worldwide scare. This led to the pharmaceutical firms ensuring 'enormous gains', while countries, including the UK, 'squandered' their meagre health budgets, with millions being vaccinated against a relatively mild disease.

6. Jan. 28 NH Conscientious Belief Exemption Hearing, USA
The New Hampshire Coalition for Vaccine Choice led by NVIC members Eileen Landies and Melanie Streeter will be participating in a public hearing on Jan. 28, 2010 in Concord, New Hampshire on proposed legislation for conscientious belief exemption to vaccination (HB 1555). They need the support of everyone who wants to help secure the right to make informed, voluntary vaccine decisions in New Hampshire. One of the most fundamental and important parental rights is for parents to have the final say over what drugs and vaccines are put into their child's body. Whether you chose to consent to your child receiving a particular vaccine or not, the important thing is that it is ultimately your decision and not the decision of a government health or school official or anyone else.

Every person to be vaccinated will receive
a pink paper noting the possible adverse
reaction brought by the A/H1N1 vaccination
The health department in south China's city of Guangzhou found that the injection of A/H1N1 flu vaccine may have led to a student catching meningitis. Tang Xiaoping, a deputy of the city's health watchdog, said Thursday preliminary research indicates the vaccination may cause the disease, but that experts have not proven how the vaccine effects the disease.

9. UK Social Workers Snatch Baby From Family On Spurious Grounds
Proud mother: Kerry Robertson and Ben,
who she isn't allowed to bring up
A couple who fled to Ireland after social workers threatened to remove their baby at birth have had the newborn snatched after all. Kerry Robertson, 17, who has mild learning difficulties, and Mark McDougall, 25, went on the run after British social services said she was not clever enough to raise a child. Dad Mr McDougall said, ‘Kerry and I are now absolutely furious because we believe our baby has been kidnapped by social services.’ LibDem MP John Hemming, who has been supporting the couple, said: ‘There is no evidence that Mark and Kerry cannot be good parents and I just hope that the Irish authorities can resolve this as quickly as possible.’

11. Senior Barnsley Social Worker Struck Off For Harassment
A former senior Social Worker from Barnsley was struck off the professional register for misconduct today. Douglas Adams was assistant director of children's services at Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. He was dismissed from his post in 2006 following a disciplinary investigation into a complaint made by one of the women, a pregnant administrative worker who said Adams suggested she should have an abortion. The panel, chaired by Barry Picken, concluded: "The committee found that the registrant's behaviour demonstrated a blatant disregard for the values of social care standards set out in the code of practice for social care workers and that a removal order was the only proportionate sanction in the circumstances of this case."

13. UK Government Breaches Rights Of DNA Innocents
More than 600 DNA profiles of innocent people across Greater Manchester are being added to the national database for every one removed. Since the ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, only eight innocent people in Greater Manchester have had their profiles removed. Liberal Democrat shadow cabinet office minister, Jenny Willott said: “It is appalling that the Government has taken the DNA of 100,000 innocent people, nationally, since they were told the practice was illegal. Despite the Government’s promises to abide by the European Court’s ruling, it is still doing everything it can to avoid it."
