Regarding Terrorism

Some terrorism experts believe that the threat from lone jihadists, such as the Fort Hood shooter, is growing, while the threat of another, 9/11-style mega-attack may actually be subsiding with a weakening of Al Qaeda's core group.

China Confidential analysts agree--and disagree. The lone jihadist threat is growing. At the same time, the United States remains shockingly vulnerable to the entire spectrum of possible Islamist terrorist acts, including but not limited to: Mumbai-style swarming assaults; coordinated suicide bombings; arson and sabotage; and car-and truck-bombings.

Moreover, a narrow focus on Al Qaeda is illogical and potentially catastrophic. Nuclear-arming Iran, which muses openly about "a world without America and Zionism," is the leading state sponsor of terrorism. Iran controls Hezbollah, which has brazenly established an important base of operations in Venezuela--where a Communist strongman, Hugo Chavez, has urged developing nations to unite in order to bring down the "American empire" and "save humankind." Chavez is capable of facilitating a terrorist reprisal against the U.S. in the event of an attack on Iran's nuclear sites by the U.S. and/or Israel.
