Director Mike Leigh cancels trip to Israel

British filmmaker Mike Leigh has joined the increasing number of artists and celebrities cancelling trips to Israel in protest of the Israeli government's actions.

Leigh, the director of Vera Drake and Secrets & Lies, says he's pulled out of a scheduled guest lectureship at the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem because of the Israeli cabinet's decision to approve a loyalty oath for all future non-Jewish citizens whereby they would pledge allegiance to Israel as a 'Jewish and democratic state.' ... Renewed negotiations over Gilad Shalit

There were noticeable differences between The Guardian, The Independent and the BBC News website on the reported resumption of talks between Israel and Hamas over the release of Israeli hostage Gilad Shalit.

The biggest issue relates to the fact that Shalit has been denied visits during the period of his capture - a clear violation of the Geneva Convention and International Human Rights Law. The BBC article on the renewed talks did not even mention that he has been denied all visits....Read more>>

Failure to report Ahmadinejad's threats

There was a clear disparity in how the different broadsheets covered Ahmadinejad's speech in Lebanon, which included numerous threats against Israel.

The Times and Daily Telegraph gave a high profile to the hostile comments, while The Guardian and The Independent more or less ignored them. The Times' Nicholas Blanford, writing in 'Ahmadinejad tours southern Lebanon symbols of war with Israel', quoted him as saying:

'I want the whole world to know that the Zionists will die one day but Lebanon will live.'...Read more>>
