OBAMA IN INDIA

Despite its undoubted international weight, INDIA does not impinge on media consciousness in the same way that China does. This probably is at least partly due to the fact that INDIA does not carry the baggage of resentment against the West, that has helped to stimulate China's progress over the years. INDIA is never discussed in terms of its potential threat, mercantile or military, in fact it was a previous Indian prime minister, Vajpayee, of the BHP that coined the term 'natural allies' in reference to India and the US.

It is obvious that the highly regarded current PM Manmohan Singh of the Congress party, is equally of that view. Indeed Obama's recent visit to INDIA could be seen to have cemented the warm personal relationships between the two leaders

Because good news, the absence of rancour is often under-reported; this in-depth look by Dr Surjit Mansingh, an acknowledged expert on India at the visit of the US president and his wife, the discussions, its results and their implications is a significant source of information. India is also remarkable because it too is racing ahead in economic terms, and interestingly its economic model, distinct from China's State directed capitalism, is a large, well educated and thriving middle class, so large indeed already as to compare with the entire populations of the two largest nations of the EU. As to the future, we were pleased to see that President Obama favours the inclusion of India with a long overdue permanent seat on the UN Security Council, but if there are any who oppose that idea, it should be worth noting that "The Economist's" World population statistics predict that INDIA by the middle of this century will have 200 Million more population than China at that time.
