My thoughts and prayers are with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, and the families of all the victims who were injured and tragically murdered by Jared Loughner. I pray that all those who are currently in recovery continue to progress while also being heartened by the stories of heroism that are emerging out of this tragedy.
Giffords was universally liked by Republicans and Democrats because not only because she had no airs about her, like other, more pretentious Representatives, but because she was a true consensus builder.
Unfortunately, the mainstream media was despicable this weekend in attempting to implicate conservatives and those associated with the Tea Party movement with this senseless act of violence.
Amidst the mainstream media’s shameless exploitation of this tragedy, I continually could not help but think one thing: What if Jared Loughner had been a Muslim?
Would the mainstream media then have called for all Muslims to be disarmed? Would they implicate all Muslims in this senseless tragedy? Would they jump to conclusions or call for restraint, like they did in almost every past incidence of terror in which Muslims were involved?
The answers are pretty shamefully obvious.
This tragedy rightfully casts a pall over this week’s events, whether they be in Congress, the state legislatures, or in Arizona, where college football’s BCS championship will take place tonight between Auburn and Oregon. There will be a moment of silence before the game. And as a lifelong Alabama fan, I would be remiss if I didn’t say, “Roll, Ducks, Roll.”
But all this is, of course, secondary to the well-being of all those who are in recovery at Tuscon. Godspeed to all of them, and may God look over them as each fights to make as full of a recovery as possible. — Tony Lee The Climate of Krugman
