The IDF’s Artillery Corps is considering a new cannon system with the ability to shoot six shells a minute with a range of 25 miles.
The system also will be easier to load automatically.
The IDF is studying two possible weapons – one manufactured in Israel by Elbit and the other by a German company that manufactures the cannon in the United States.
The new cannon system that will be chosen will replace the Doher 155mm cannon system which has served the Artillery Corps for years but which officials say needs to be updated.
The Elbit “ATMOS” cannon system under consideration is transported by truck and fires a 155mm shell.
Artillery shells have been a mainstay of the IDF in fighting terror in Gaza and along the Lebanese border.

Israel-based Elbit Systems has won a multi-million dollar contract to supply and install an anti-terror security system at the Haifa port, which includes a chemical terminal that is a prime target for Hizbullah and other terrorists.
The port came under rocket attack during the Second Lebanon War five years ago.
Elbit, which is listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange, said the perimeter security project will include an advanced command and control system which will enable the interoperability of various security systems, such as surveillance, closed-circuit TV (CCTV) with advanced image processing capabilities as well as electronic fences.
The existing security systems currently protecting the Haifa ports will be connected to the new systems to be supplied, all of which will be interconnected to the Haifa Port Security Centre.
Elbit Security Systems Ltd. chairman Adi Dar said, “This new contract for the protection of the central and vital Haifa port, further strengthens Elbit Systems' leading position in offering tailored solutions for transportation and critical infrastructure security, and I trust that this contract will lead to additional contracts, in Israel and abroad."
Elbit Systems is an international defense electronics company engaged in a wide range of programs throughout the world and includes Elbit Systems and other subsidiaries.
It operates in the areas of aerospace, land and naval systems, communications, computers, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance, unmanned aircraft systems and electro-optic space systems.
