'The Pogrom' On Nov. 9-10, 1938, Kristallnacht -- “the night of broken glass” -- became a turning point in the Holocaust. When JTA reported it, it was simply called “the pogrom.” Daylight savings: Woke up in a panic this morning? Then you probably forgot to turn your clock back one hour. Daylight Savings Timeended last night, the result of a law passed in 2005 -- a law that had some Jews groaning at the coffee grinder. Timely taboo: The U.S. and Israel announced last week that it will freeze funding to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) after the international cultural agency approved full membership of the Palestinians. Following a diplomatic snafu, Israel joined UNESCO on Sep. 13, 1949, and within weeks opposed the admittance of Germany "until the time when the Germans have given sufficient proof of their good will.” This is not the first time the U.S. has pulled support from UNESCO, as reported in 1975. During a contentious 1989 PLO bid for full membership, the U.S. threatened to never return to the agency (after having quit in protest in 1985). Of course, this hubbub hardly compares to the time UNESCO tried to take away Shabbos.
