'Abdallah 'Azzam Brigades Deny Involvement in Damascus Bombings
The following report is a complimentary offering from MEMRI's Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor (JTTM.)
The jihadi forum Al-Fidaa published a communiqué by the 'Abdallah 'Azzam Brigades, a jihadi group identified with Al-Qaeda and purportedly active in Syria and Lebanon, in which the group denied the mujahideen had any involvement in the recent bombings in Damascus. The message, dated December 27, 2011, claimed that the Syrian regime had carried out the bombings itself, and said the fact that it had tried to pin them on the mujahideen proved that the regime was willing to employ any means to distract public opinion from its criminal deeds and to stave off its inevitable and imminent collapse. The group said that the mujahideen "do not cover up their actions and are not ashamed of them," but regularly claim responsibility for them in their official media organs.
