As some of you know, I write a poem each year for St George's Day
and also Remembrance Day 11th.of November.
As various services are already going on re the latter,
I place here for you this years Remembrance Day's poem.
Thursday, 8 November 2012
Another British Soldier was killed today in Afghanistan,
That soldier doing his duty was some-ones much loved son,
Perhaps he left a wife behind, a loving kiss goodbye,
Off to that strange country yet not know the reason why.
I look at other’s sadness, their naked grief upon their face,
I thank God my lad was spared and came home sound and safe.
He roamed the world, made many friends, yet returned from foreign lands
Yet sadness too he came to know, for at Warren Point he lost his friends.
I look at my eldest son, now a granddad like HIS dad,
I think over all these years at the special times we had,
I look at other soldier’s Moms and think what might have been,
Those killed by sniper’s bullets or those treacherous I.E.D's.
Yet another loving mother has today lost her only son,
But that is not all she has lost for when all is said and done
The feeling of a grand child’s arms clasped tightly round your neck,
The lisp of a little child as they give a gentle caress,
For others may never know or hear those children’s faltering words,
As they gently stumble through a poem or other kinds of verse.
No “clapping” when their turn comes to its cheerful end,
For their Dad didn’t return from that unforgiving foreign land.
The incredible sorrow at the loss of a much loved Son,
No one to follow, extend the family line, all that now gone,
The deep despair not knowing WHY his life was cut so short,
That the last farewell, the deep sorrow, will never take away the hurt.
My deep anger at those Politicians as before the Cenotaph they stand,
As they bow their heads for those they sent to fight in foreign lands.
Deep shame for those that sent them, while their country gave away.
Yet they too will pay a heavy price, for their ‘time’ will come one day.
