China overtakes US as world’s largest net oil importer: US net oil imports dropped in December to 5.98m barrels a day, the lowest since February 1992, according to provisional figures from the US Energy Information Administration. In the same month, Chinese net oil imports – defined also as crude and refined oil products – surged to 6.12m b/d, according to the country’s custom office.
Obama renews budget offer to cut social safety nets: President Barack Obama raised anew the issue of cutting entitlements such as Medicare and Social Security as a way out of damaging budget cuts, a White House official said on Sunday, as both sides in Washington tried to limit a fiscal crisis that may soon hit millions of Americans.
