Weekly Commentary:  Advice to those confused by Netanyahu on Palestinians

Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 20 June 2013

I am frequently asked what is really Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's
position on a sovereign Palestinian state.

After all, for much of his career, he was one of the most eloquent and
cogent statesman explaining why the establishment of the sovereign
Palestinian state would have terrible and devastating consequences.

Is his position now truly a change of heart of simply a tactical move
dictated by current conditions and predicated on what may very well be a
reasonable assumption that nothing will come from all of this anyway?

Frankly speaking, I do not think that this is actually the operative
question.

The question for us is how we relate to this position.

And the answer is simple:  to thine own self be true.
.
It is, after all, a win-win situation:

If PM Netanyahu genuinely supports the establishment of a sovereign
Palestinian state then it is important to contribute to the policy debate in
the hopes that public opinion will ultimately prevail.

On the other hand, if this is only a tactical move, opposition to a
sovereign Palestinian state actually serves to strengthen, rather than
weaken, Binyamin Netanyahu's hand.

And a word of warning to those who opt to simply embrace whatever PM
Netanyahu says about the Palestinians and a sovereign Palestinian state:  in
the age of internet and Google, whatever you write today in support of
position "X" will still be readily accessible a year from now should he
shift and oppose position "X".
